MARKHAM – Every year, the weekend before Thanksgiving is a very special one for York Region residents, many of whom gather in north Markham for a four-day fall celebration offering contests, shows, exhibitions, rides and all kinds of fun family activities.

The Markham Fair is one of the country’s oldest agricultural festivals – the first one took place in 1844 – and this year’s event, taking place from October 3rd to October 6th, has already generated local hype as the signs have started to appear all over the City of Markham.

Where does the Markham Fair take place?

The Markham Fair Fairgrounds are located at the intersection of Elgin Mills Road and McCowan Road, just a bit east of Highway 404. There is plenty of parking available at the fairgrounds, and volunteers will be on site to help guide you to an open spot.

Is there a family admission package?

The Markham fair is one of the GTA’s most affordable annual events, offering great admission prices for families and kids. If you are taking your family to the fair, you’ll probably want to consider grabbing a Special Pass for $30 – that will grant a full day of fair admission to two adults and up to three kids. Additional children are just $2 each!

What are some of the Can’t-Miss Activities?

Many of the fair’s biggest draws, such as the carnival midway, food vendors, and agricultural showcases, will be available for the full duration of the fair. That having been said, there are a few special events lined up for the 2013 Markham Fair:

  • A cherished Markham Fair tradition and one of the fair’s biggest draws, the Demolition Derby will be taking place at 7 PM on Saturday October 5th. This year, the derby’s organizers promise “four classes of metal-crushing mayhem” in a spectacle event that is suitable for the whole family.
  • Every day of the fair at 12:00 PM, guests are invited to take in an aeronautical demonstration by the Skyhawks, the Canadian Forces’ Parachute Team. The team has entertained millions of spectators for the last 41 years – so expect an excellent display of skill and showmanship.
  • On October 5th, local rock’n’rollers Young Empires will take the stage at the “Crow’s Corral” for an epic set. Doors will open at 8:00 PM; this is a 19+ event.

There are dozens of additional activities that it would be impossible for us to preview in this small space, but you can check them all out by visiting this helpful page.

We hope you enjoy this year’s edition of the Markham Fair – see you at the fairgrounds this weekend!
