March Break 2016: Family Fun Ideas in the GTA

Share this post:

GREATER TORONTO – With the Easter long weekend set to take place in March this year, Ontario residents can look forward to March Break occurring a little bit earlier than usual this year – on the week of March 14-18, to be exact.

While March Break is always an exciting time for families, it is also one you need to plan for, especially if your kids are younger and tend to get restless around the house. With that in mind, here are a few of our ideas for family activities taking place around Greater Toronto this coming week:

Maple Syrup Festival @ Bronte Creek Provincial Park

For residents of the western GTA, Oakville’s Bronte Creek Provincial Park is a well-loved local amenity, offering scenic ravine hiking trails, family camping facilities, and even a children’s farm — all just off of Highway 403 and within easy driving distance of Mississauga.

Usually limited to March weekends, the park’s annual Maple Syrup Festival will be in full swing every day of next week, from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM. For just $17 per car, families can enjoy tons of different activities including a pancake house, fresh maple taffy/candy, wagon rides, farm animals, historical tours, and more.

Walt Disney Classics on the Big Screen @ TIFF Bell Lightbox

Located in the Entertainment District of Toronto, the TIFF Bell Lightbox is one of Toronto’s most prized theatres, typically praised for its curation of avant-garde and classic cinema selections. For March Break, however, the theatre is presenting a kid-friendly Disney screening series that includes classics like Dumbo, The Little Mermaid, and The Aristocats.

For ideas on what to check out before or after the show, feel free to check out our Entertainment District Neighbourhood Profile, which highlights some of the area’s must-see spots.

March Break Madness @ McMichael Canadian Art Collection

If you live in York Region but haven’t yet made your way out to Vaughan to check out McMichael’s tremendous visual art collection, there’s no better time for your first trip. Throughout March Break, the gallery will be hosting a series of family performances – from storytelling and puppets, to original live music – and best of all, they’re included in the price of your admission.

To add some interactive fun to your visit, each family is encouraged to pick up a free “Paper Factory Paper Bag” stuffed with activities designed to enhance children’s’ gallery experience.
