Neighbourhood Profile: Streetsville

MISSISSAUGA – When it comes to the history of Peel Region, few of the area’s communities are more steeped in it than Streetsville – one of Mississauga’s best-preserved communities, and a rapidly-growing real estate hotspot for young families.

Named after Timothy Street, one of the community’s most prominent early landowners, Streetsville boasts a history that goes back to 1818, when the British government was awarded the final tract of land adjacent to Mississauga’s Credit River. The community prospered upon the success of five major milling operations, and by 1850, was known as the “Queen of the County.”

While Timothy Street’s family home (c. 1825) still stands today, the community around it has transformed dramatically into a bustling streetscape boasting chic retail destinations, dining options, green spaces, and a highly sought-after blend of low- and mid-rise residential offerings.

Fiercely proud of their neighbourhood’s relatively distinct identity, Streetsville’s residents are known for their strong sense of community – one that is routinely on display at neighbourhood events such as the annual Bread and Honey Festival, or the City Mississauga’s official Santa Claus Parade.

Buying a Home in Streetsville

Many home buyers interested in Streetsville are attracted by its wealth of detached homes, which are generally located on spacious, well-treed lots along side streets like Joymar Drive, Swanhurst Boulevard, or Falconer Drive.

Many of the homes in these areas are bungalows, and nearly all are within minutes of nearby parkland (or the Credit River itself) – both factors that help make it an ideal neighbourhood for budget-conscious younger families.

In recent years, however, buyers looking for a Streetsville address have been presented with more and more attractive options for buying new. Here are a few of our favourite newer developments located within the neighbourhood:

Ville Condos (60 Tannery Street)

Located just a short stroll away from Streetsville’s main plaza and retail strip, Ville Condos – currently under construction – will offer four storeys of modern condos, bringing together “the best of urban living and small town charm.”

Developed by reputable local builder Forest Green Homes, Ville Condos’ suites start in just the $300,000s – making them an exceptionally affordable option for those seeking to buy their first home in Streetsville.

Heritage Gate (4309 Mississauga Road)

Located on Mississauga Road just a short distance southeast of Queen Street, Heritage Gate’s collection of upcoming towns and semi-detached homes feature a classic design, intended to reflect the history of the surrounding area (the community’s location is right across from the historic Leslie Log House).

Developed by Dunpar Homes, Heritage Gate’s offering of 65 properties range in size from 1,500 to 2,800 square feet, and will include luxury features such as hardwood flooring, granite/marble countertops, 9’ main floor ceilings, and upgraded Georgian wood trim.

Symphony Place Private Estates

Having been announced very recently by Cachet Estate Homes, Symphony Place will be located on Mississauga Road in Streetsville – although few other details have been released to date.

We do know that the community will include 15 executive detached homes, ranging in size from 3,469 to 5,169 square feet, and in price from roughly $1.395 million to $2 million.

Streetsville Village Square:  The (Completely Overhauled) Heart of the Neighbourhood

Initially unveiled in September of 2014, following a $3.1 million redevelopment and name change, the newly-revitalized Streetsville Village Square – located at the intersection of Main and Queen Streets – is the community’s favourite gathering place, and arguably its biggest draw for visitors and residents alike.

The City of Mississauga’s “Official Opening” for the new square took place on June 6, 2015, and was personally attended by Mayor Bonnie Crombie as well as Ward 11 Councillor George Carlson. Since then, the revitalized square has already hosted a number of seasonal events over the course of its first summer in business.

Indeed, the square’s transformation features a number of impressive upgrades, including a performance stage area, energy efficient lighting, sound systems and accessible features. For low-key gatherings, the space also now includes an abundance of public seating, complete with eye-catching yellow umbrellas atop many of the tables.

Renovations of the square also included upgrading the street surface with attractive brickwork, as well as a refurbishment and relocation of the Streetsville Cenotaph – a treasured local monument and a part of the community’s history since 1926.

Family Life in Streetsville: Parks and Schools

One of Streetsville’s most notable charms is its proximity to one of the Credit River’s premium scenic stretches. Within a walkable distance from home, Streetsville residents can treat themselves to a refreshing riverside stroll at Riverrun Park, Riverview Park, Streetsville Memorial Park, or Credit Meadows Park.

Other urban green spaces like Turney Woods Park, Vista Heights Park, and Meadow Green Park, are even less of a walk – tucked in amongst the area’s residential neighbourhoods and schools. Streetsville’s families also enjoy access to a number of elementary schools, including Dolphin Senior Public School, Vista Heights Public School, and Ray Underhill Public School, as well as a couple of private academies.

Streetsville Secondary School

Located centrally on Joymar Drive, just west of Streetsville’s main roadway, Streetsville Secondary School has served the area since it opened in 1958. In addition to a broad assortment of athletic teams and clubs, the school has offered a popular French Immersion programme since 2005.

During the 2013-14 schoolyear, Streetsville Secondary School’s students enjoyed solid results on both the Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics – in which academic-enrolled students came within one per cent of the provincial success rate – and particularly in the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, in which the school’s first-time-eligible Grade 10 students achieved a 94 per cent success rate, surpassing the board-wide rate by 10 points.
