Spotlight on Mississauga Real Estate: Hurontario Street LRT Project

MISSISSAUGA – This week our real estate brokerage was very excited to send out the first edition of our Living in Mississauga newsletter. The feature story was on Brampton and Mississauga’s exciting plans for a Light Rail System along Hurontario Road and Main Street.

This expansive proposed line would provide service to approximately 28 stops, from the GO station in Brampton all the way to the waterfront in Port Credit.

Those behind the project have yet to determine the cost and secure solid funding, but Metrolinx has identified the LRT as a “priority project,” and the project team is aiming for a 2014 start date on LRT construction.

What will this mean for current homeowners – or those looking at buying a house or condo – along Hurontario Street in Mississauga?

The biggest changes will be positive for the community:

  • A friendlier design for both transit commuters and pedestrians would likely reduce traffic congestion on the roadways.
  • The master plan for the LRT envisions a more compact approach to planning and building homes – and mixed-use areas – along the train’s route. A more walkable community is likely to attract trendy mid-rise developments – potentially having a positive impact on both the appearance of the neighbourhood and its residential property values.
  • Better transit to the area will encourage trendy businesses, restaurants and entertainment to set up shop along Hurontario Street and Main Street.

Just as the implementation of Viva’s Rapidway is helping to heat up Markham’s real estate market along Highway 7, it’s safe to say that the addition of LRT to the Hurontario-Main corridor will make Mississauga an even greater place to buy a home.
