Community’s post-games conversion will add more than 1,100 condos and townhouses to Toronto waterfront

TORONTO – The Province of Ontario has passed another milestone in getting ready to host the 2015 Pan Am / Parapan Games this summer, by cutting the ribbon on the Athletes’ Village – a sprawling community that, come July, will serve as a temporary home for 7,100 athletes and team officials hailing from all over the western hemisphere.

Managed through Infrastructure Ontario and developed by Dundee Kilmer, the athletes’ village – located east of Cherry Street and south of Eastern Avenue, just a stone’s throw from Corktown Common park – represents the result of a rare convergence between the worlds of real estate and international sport.

Given the Government of Ontario’s major role in the community’s development, it’s no surprise that Premier Kathleen Wynne, as well as cabinet MPPs Michael Coteau and Brad Duguid, were all on site for the Pan Am village’s official completion event on Friday, February 20.

“Designed as a walkable community with a brand-new YMCA, health services and 18 hour Corktown Common Park, the Village will not only provide an exceptional experience for athletes, but also enable future residents to enjoy strong, healthy lives after the games,” said Minister Coteau, whose portfolio includes overseeing preparations for the Games.

“This landmark investment will generate significant economic activity in Toronto’s waterfront community,” added Minister Duguid, “And provide state-of-the-art infrastructure for generations to enjoy.”

A key component of the 80-acre West Don Lands revitalization project, the Pan Am athletes’ village – developed under the alternate title of Canary Districtwas developed to attain a LEED Gold sustainability rating, and is equipped with “one of Canada’s first open access ultra-high-speed broadband networks” – an apparent must-have for new developments in the increasingly competitive downtown condo  market.

After it has fulfilled its role as a temporary home for Pan Am athletes, the community will be converted to a mixed-use area that will include:

  • 800 open-market townhomes and condos;
  • Up to 100 “affordable ownership” condos and townhouses, plus 253 “affordable rental” units – with up to 10 per cent of affordable homes designed to be fully wheelchair-accessible;
  • A brand-new YMCA facility, complete with gym, fitness studio, swimming pool, and accessible green roof;
  • 40,000 square foot retail promenade along Front Street.

Buyers interested in becoming a part of this special community haven’t missed their chance to do so. We invite you to head over to our New Releases index and explore Canary Park, a newly released two-tower development located just east of the athletes’ village.
