Starting a garden can sometimes feel intimidating, but throughout this article you can learn what vegetables and herbs to start planting in July so you have plenty to harvest in time for Fall. We’ll learn what steps need to be taken in order for your garden to thrive, such as how much water and sunlight your plants need, and when to harvest them.

Herbs

Starting off simple, herbs such as basil, cilantro, parsley and chives are both easy to grow and maintain. These are also the types of herbs that you can buy from your local grocery store or garden center, and re-pot in your home garden. I would place these herbs in a very sunny spot in your yard, since herbs such as these can tolerate a lot of sunlight. When it comes to watering, aim for two-three times a week, but feel free to make adjustments based on the weather in your area.

Green Onions

Green onions are another easy-to-grow vegetable that you can actually replant time and time again. Next time you are cooking with a green onion, save the bottom two to three inches of the root end and place it in a glass of shallow water. After about three days, you’ll see that the green onion is starting to regrow. Once you start to see a bit of growth, move it outside with the rest of your herbs and vegetables and replant it.

Leafy vegetables: Lettuce, Spinach and Kale

Leafy vegetables

These leafy greens are another vegetable that you can grow into the Fall. These types of leafy vegetables tend to do well in the cooler temperatures, so there is no need to worry during the chilly Fall nights. You don’t want to give these greens too much sunlight as you want to prevent the leaves from wilting. Rather than one large watering a week, try giving these plants small amounts of water multiple times throughout the week.

Carrots

Carrots are our final simple-to-grow vegetable that is perfect to plant in July. Make sure you don’t plant the seeds too deep in the soil, and give them plenty of sun and water. A few signs that you’ll know when they are ready to harvest is if the carrot greens have grown above the soil, the top of the carrot root is popping out of the soil, and the tops show a vibrant colour.

Some important advice about gardening is to keep things consistent! Make sure you watch for weeds and pull them out as necessary. You may also want to keep a schedule, try gardening during cooler times of the day like in the morning or evening. Although it may be daunting trying to start a vegetable garden, hopefully this article helps you determine how to start, and what herbs and vegetables to start growing now!
