GREATER TORONTO – With classes set to resume in less than a month, it’s time for back-to-school shopping and preparation for parents who have already registered their children.
For those who have not yet done so, the deadline is close – and the task is a little bit trickier this year, thanks to several new GTA schools that will welcome their first students this September.
Whether you’ve just moved to a new area, or are looking to keep on top of what’s new in your school zone, we looked into what’s brand-new for the 2016-2017 school year.
Toronto District School Board Opening Four Learning Centres
Developed with a goal of improving both teachers’ effectiveness and students’ achievement levels, Toronto’s four new learning centres will provide spaces where teachers can access learning coaches, coordinators, and professional support staff.
Two of the learning centres’ key goals will be improving communications with parents, as well as making it easier for parents (as well as students) to access & navigate school system resources. With that in mind, it may be a good idea to check where your neighbourhood falls within the Learning Centre Boundary Map, and make a note of the learning centre that will be serving your family.
Peel Region Welcomes Brampton Students to Three New Schools
When it comes to school openings, Brampton will quite possibly be Ontario’s busiest city this fall, with the Peel District School Board getting set to open three brand-new schools in the area this September:
- Dolson Public School, 95 Remembrance Road
- McClure Public School, 50 Parity Road
- Jean Augustine Secondary School, 500 Elbern Markell Drive
New for 2016, Peel is also offering parents access to a new tool called School Cash Online, which provides one easy online portal for school-related fees such as pizza days and field trips. The portal, which was opened to the public on June 13, is already accepting registrations at the above link.
York Region Adding New School in Vaughan
Residents of the rapidly-growing neighbourhoods just north of Woodbridge will be accommodated by the September 2016 opening of a new school in the area: Johnny Lombardi Public School.
Located at 350 Lawford Road, the school features 27 classrooms and will accept roughly 300 students in its first year of operation. Parents can check this map to see whether their home falls within the boundary for the new school.
