Antique Markets
Antique and vintage markets are a great way to find affordable home decor, and they are also a great weekend activity. One of my favourite antique markets located in the Greater Toronto Area is the Aberfoyle Antique Market near Guelph. This market is open every Sunday from 8am-4pm until October 29, and costs $5 to enter with free parking.
Located just south of Guelph, you can explore the outdoor market and find anything from furniture to dishes, jewellery, paintings, frames, and so much more. The vendors at Aberfoyle Antique market are also very affordable considering the pieces they have to offer. You could spend hours walking through the market and find just about anything you can think of.
Thrift Stores
Thrift stores are a great place to bring in some of your old furniture that you don’t love as much, look for some new inspiration, and to find affordable ways to furnish your home. They are also another option where you can find just about anything.
Dishes and other kitchen items are a pretty common find at the thrift store. Along with other items like flower vases, serving trays, books, and small knick knacks that could be used for easy and affordable decorating. Certain thrift stores will also carry a great variety of furniture. For example, Value Village is a great place to start if you’re looking for items such as bed-side tables, coffee tables, chairs, and other small furniture.
Furniture Flips
The next tip for affordable ways to furnish your home is to look at flipping furniture, either for profit or yourself. In recent years, furniture flips have become a very popular process when trying to decorate your home, or to earn a little extra cash for the furniture you have dreamed of buying. The number one place people will go to when looking to flip furniture is Facebook Marketplace, which is a great platform to find cheap and worn down furniture.
Many people will purchase this furniture, take it home, repair it, then resell it for a higher price. Sometimes if the renovation was really successful, people will make a decent profit form their flip. Alternatively, they may just keep the furniture for themselves if it fits the design ideas for their home.
There are lots of ways that in which you could ‘flip’ a piece of furniture, from a simple clean to a full refurbish. You could be add a new coat of paint, put new fabric on, replace the handles of a dresser, fix scratches, replace the locks, or anything other cosmetic change.
DIYs
DIYs or ‘do it yourself’ jobs are affordable projects that can help to give your home a more personal touch. Perhaps the most common DIY task that is currently trending through social media is DIY art work. This may include, for example, re-creating expensive pieces of art with simple materials that you can buy at your local craft store.
Other affordable DIY jobs include using some of your favourite photos and prints to create a collage for your bedroom wall, building your own furniture using online guides, or fixing things that are already in your house.
