Your GTA Guide to Late Summer Family Fun

It’s that time of year again – the summer nights are starting to feel a little longer, and a breeze has crept in to help relieve the city of late July’s sizzling summer temperatures. Indeed, Back-to-School season is almost upon us again in Greater Toronto.

For those parents looking to make the most of the remaining days of summer break, however, there are still plenty of family-friendly options for afternoon/ evening getaways, without having to leave town. GTA Real Estate News is here to help – here are a few of our team’s top suggestions for ways to make the most of the last days of summer.

Catching a Late-Season Blue Jays Game

During the second half of July, it was tough to open a Toronto newspaper without seeing an article or two about the big-spending (and now widely feared) Toronto Blue Jays.

Without a doubt, Blue Jays fever has descended upon the City of Toronto, as following a flurry of high-profile midseason trades – including transactions that netted renowned superstars Troy Tulowitzki and David Price – the Jays now find themselves poised for a serious shot at their first World Series appearance since 1993.

Luckily, the final days of the summer break coincide with a lengthy Jays home-stand at the Rogers Centre, where they’ll take on the Detroit Tigers (August 28-30), the Cleveland Indians (August 31 – September 2), and heavy-hitting division rivals the Baltimore Orioles (September 4-6). Tickets are available online here, but the games will likely sell out, so make sure to buy early.

Sample Local Grub; Tunes at SoundBites in Mississauga

Building upon a hugely-successful 2014 edition that featured internationally-renowned hip hop group De La Soul, SoundBites’ unique blend of featured musical performances and mobile eats will return to Mississauga Celebration Square on Saturday, August 29.

Running from 5 PM to 11 PM, this year’s event will feature performances by local artist Junia T, K.I.D., and hugely popular alt-rockers July Talk. The event will also include the presentation of the 4th Annual AwesTRUCK Food Truck Awards – with roughly 20 food trucks scheduled to be on-site at the event, joined by culinary “pop-ups” representing more than 10 local restaurants.

Acrobatics, Air Shows, and More at the Canadian National Exhibition

With its storied history, expansive fairgrounds, and huge assortment of live entertainment, the Canadian National Exhibition (known simply as “The Ex”) is arguably Toronto’s most popular and well-known summertime attraction for families.

Taking place from August 21 to September 7, 2015’s edition of the CNE will feature a number of special events such as the Bon Voyage! Acrobatics and skating show, RUSH parkour demonstration, and China’s own Yate Acrobats – as well as tried-and-true standbys like the midway carnival, food pavilion, and Warriors’ Day Parade.
